Choosing a physician for abortion services is a very private and individual decision, and it can be difficult for patients to recognize what is important in determining what to look for in a facility which provides abortion care. First, it is important to recognize that, as with all medical and surgical procedures, you are actually choosing a doctor to perform your surgical procedure. While it is always important to have a modern, comfortable, and appropriately staffed facility, it is ultimately the physician who is responsible for your safety and medical treatment. It is important that only actively licensed and practicing medical doctors are making any decisions that are related to your care and as with all physician choices, it is important to choose a physician with the proper experience in the surgical procedure. Florida Women's Center is one of the few facilities in Florida qualified and certified to actually provide both early and advanced termination procedures. Be aware that some facilities may advertise that they perform the more complicated or advanced procedures but when you get there they might not actually have a doctor experienced enough to perform the procedure or the facility may only refer you to someone who can. Due to our physician experience and qualifications in providing safe advanced and complicated termination procedures, and our facility has complied with the highest level of regulation by the State of Florida, and Florida Women's Center has an advanced criteria license enabling us to provide total care for patients who need us. In contrast, clinics without this advanced license can only provide early first trimester abortions are not required to meet these strict educational, monitoring, equipment, and required safety standards by the State of Florida. While claiming to be licensed, these abortion clinics may meet only the older basic license requirements and therefore cannot provide terminations above 14 weeks or in the second trimester legally in the State of Florida. Although patients may not be aware of this, there is a real difference between some abortion clinics in Florida. There are still clinics in Florida providing abortions that only meet the minimum requirements for State licensing or early abortions, and these clinics are limited to providing only the early 1st trimester abortions by law. Unfortunately, some of these 1st trimester abortion clinics also still may not offer or provide effective IV anesthesia to assure patient comfort for the abortion procedure.
